The amount that people said they would tip these workers is up from last year, but really just a return to what they tipped in 2021 inflation last year lowered the amount that people were able to spend on tips by a bit.
So we're seeing more of a return to that this year.
And that could be because people have a more long-term relationship with people who they're tipping for the holidays.
They're often interacting with these people every day or every week.
So it feels really different from being asked to tip
after one interaction or in the case of self-checkout, no interaction at all.
So this year, the median reported tip amount among respondents to that bank rate survey varied pretty significantly depending on the service provider.
But to break down some of the different categories, they planned to give housekeepers $50 on average, child care providers, again, $50.
Landscapers and snow removers, an average of $37, very specific.
Teachers, $25.
Mail carriers, $20.
And trash and recycling collectors, $25.
And again, that's up a little bit across every single category.
It's not just somebody who you're seeing one time and perhaps never again.
It's people who they're interacting with regularly and really want to acknowledge this time of year.
They feel they really deserve a little bit extra and that it's a gift like anything else.
Some businesses are now raising worker pay in part as a response to lower gratuities.
So
Since their workers are getting fewer tips, they are having to pay a bit more in order to retain their staff.
So we spoke to Dan Moreno, who is the founder of Flamingo Appliance Service, which is based in Miami, back in July.
