Colleagues, today we are honoring the spirit of adventure and exploration in a woman who has made her career out of sharing her love of travel with her clients and her students and our city.
Joanne Giovannoni has run Portal World Travel on Ocean Avenue for 47 years.
During that time, she has shared her experience and expertise with hundreds of appreciative customers who know her to be an expert for all details, great and small.
She has organized trips for customers to destinations
all over the world, from Australia to Easter Island.
Long-time loyal customers have shared that Joanne is creative when planning excursions and tough when negotiating with the airlines and vendors.
So beyond the incredible work that Joanne has done for all our neighbors with her business, she also has been a mentor for many employees and an inspiration
for generations of students at City College of San Francisco for the travel and tourism program, which as we all know, travel and tourism is actually the number one industry of San Francisco.
Joanne served as chair of this program at City College before retiring from teaching in 2021.
Her classes were fun, informative, and she has always put just the top of the quality for all the latest international travel trends.
Joanne, I want to take your class, so I hope you maybe do that favor for us at some point.
Many of her students have gone on to build thriving tourism and travel careers for themselves and continue to look at Joanne for guidance.
Under her inspired leadership, the travel and tourism program at City College generated significant revenue and earned international distinction, driven by her classes full of international students, local residents, returning veterans, attaining their graduation with a GI Bill.
Thank you for all of that, Joanne.
While she is no longer teaching at City College, Joanne Giovannoni's generous spirit continues to inspire a love of travel, curiosity in other places and cultures, and just the love of the other and the adventure of it in everyone who encounters her.
Her enthusiasm is infectious.
Thank you, Joanne, for reminding us to explore, to learn, to love the world around us, and for mentoring so many generations of young people to do the same.
