She grew up in a family where hairstyling was a tradition and she inherited that love and talent from her grandmother, Olivia Clay.
After working in retail, April followed that path that had been calling her since childhood.
She attended Miss Marty Miss Marty's beauty school, became a licensed hairstylist, and continued developing her craft under the guidance of Brownie Sims before building a career at Hair Play Salon, where she spent more than twenty five years.
But April's work was never just about hair.
Anyone who sat in her chair knows that.
You might have come in for your appointment, but you were leaving with a good story and tears in your eyes from laughing too hard.
April had a gift for making people feel beautiful, but perhaps more importantly, she had a gift for making people feel like they mattered.
And that was April.
It was said she never met a stranger, only friends she hadn't met yet.
She had an energy that could fill a room and she had a story for just about everything.
Perhaps one of the most memorable stories that we heard was that her insistence that Michael Jackson was her first boyfriend.
Now, whether Michael knew about this relationship is another story, but April certainly did.
And with so much confidence in her telling, it's hard to not see the truth in such a claim.
After all, who are we to really speculate?
April also knew how to enjoy life.
