High school kids are walking the streets at 2.30.
When I make a pledge, I'm gonna do this.
So I get elected and sworn in May 2011.
The contract that I inherit is up 2012.
Call it May.
I could be wrong exact month, but somewhere in 2012, later part.
In between, I'm on the last year of Mayor Daley's last contract.
Preceding seven years, the teachers are getting a 4% compounded pay raise.
No increase in time at all.
And not that they deserve it.
The mayor has reserved the right in every one of those contracts, going back 40 years, unilaterally to pull the pay if the school system's in financial distress.
Never happened.
I, without consulting the president of the union, who had a relationship, I took her to a ballet together when I was mayor elect.
We went to dance.
I took her to dinner and ballet to create a personal relationship.
I do.
Yeah.
I go DEFCON.
I unilaterally pull it.
