And it's partly because it was an unprecedented epidemic, as you said, John.

It had never occurred in West Africa before, so the people there didn't know anything about it.

If you saw the movie Blood Diamond, that was set in Sierra Leone.

So it's an area that's rich in natural resources but very poor, among the poorest countries in the world with very low numbers of healthcare workers.

Very weak health systems, very porous borders.

And I think we learnt a lot of things.

One about that, you know, you don't just sit around hoping for a drug or a vaccine.

There are lots of other things you can do, like just isolate people.

So from March, when they identified the epidemic to September, there was no disease control goal.

Nobody said this is what we need to do.

They were just writing about it.

And saying how bad it was.

And then a person from the US published a paper, a modeling paper, showing that if you isolated 70% of patients, because people were just dying on the streets, they had didn't have hospital beds, they couldn't isolate people.

So he showed that if you isolated 70% of patients, you could control the epidemic.

So then months later in September, that became the disease control goal.

You had all the responding

Militaries coming in, they built field hospitals, tent hospitals, and immediately increased the capacity to isolate patients.

And that's what controlled the epidemic in the end.
