Our colleague Shane Phelan had a story today from the Justice Minister, Jim O'Callaghan, that while there isn't an extradition treaty in place between Ireland and Jordan, there are arrangements that can be made on a case-by-case basis.

I think that has happened in the case of a matter involving the United Arab Emirates.

So he was hopeful that through diplomatic channels, there might be some kind of progress achieved.

The easiest way out of this would be as if the individual voluntarily agrees to return to Ireland to assist Gardaí with their inquiries.

Failing that, it's difficult to see what happens next.

Certainly the absence of an extradition arrangement makes it very difficult for the Irish authorities.

And, you know, several of my Gardaí sources have said, look,

this is going to be challenging given the circumstances.

But I think certainly a lot of people are surprised at the rapidity in which this man was detained in Jordan.

So it's possible that there may be further surprising developments down the line.

Very much so.

And there was also a suggestion that this man may have had access to other travel documents so that he may not have been, you know, traveling or living under his own name.

But again, the Jordanian authorities, they really do have evidence.

exceptionally well-informed intelligence services and police services.

So this man was certainly detained by them very quickly or certainly a short period of time after he re-entered the country.

Again, it's worth pointing out that a lot of these countries, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates,

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, countries like that, they don't, as a matter of fact, like to extradite their own citizens, particularly in cases of what you'd call criminal matters.

Terrorist offences are completely different.

That's a different set of rules altogether.

But in this particular case, Jordan doesn't have an extradition arrangement with Ireland.
