And so you had a committee of diverse views and talents, even though they were all white men, but they shared a love of science.
And they were readers of history.
They'd all read John Locke's Second Treatise on Government.
People like John Locke come up with the notion of a social contract as the source of our rights, as the source of our governance.
And Thomas Hobbes.
They knew about the state of nature, nasty, brutish, and short.
