The stories have been passed down like warnings.
The overcrowded cells, the violence that erupts without reason, the way time slows to almost nothing when there's nowhere to go.
That fear, that deep, primal dread of confinement, is one of the most powerful forces keeping society in line.
We follow the rules, we stay in our lane, because somewhere in the back of our minds, we know what awaits us if we don't.
But for the most dangerous men in America, the threat of an ordinary prison just wasn't enough.
They needed somewhere worse.
Somewhere inescapable.
Not just by walls and wire, but by geography itself.
So they made a notorious prison on an island.

At the time it was completely uninhabited, other than a few flocks of pelicans.
In fact, Alcatraz's original name was Isla de los Alcatraces, which is the loose translation in Spanish for Island of the Pelicans.
It was also very tiny.
In total, Alcatraz only covered 22 acres, not even a tenth of a mile.
If you've ever been to Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, it's about the same size, which is pretty small.
