Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord?
And then David cried, I've sinned against heaven.
And then we see, because of that knowledge of seeing sin as being exceedingly sinful, we have Psalm 51.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your loving kindness, according to the multitude of your tender mercies.
Blot out my transgressions against you, and you only have I sinned, and now there's evil in your sight.
So that's an insight into genuine repentance.
Contrition produces repentance unto life, Scripture says.
And you can see it in the life of the prodigal son.
He went to his dad and said, give me my money.
And then he went to a far country.
Why did he go to a far country?
Because he wanted to get away from his father because he knew he wanted to spend time with prostitutes.
That was where his heart wanted to take him.
And that really is a picture of atheism.
Atheism is a far country.
Sinners just want to get away, as far away as they can from God.
And what brought the prodigal son to his senses was when he looked at that pig food and realized he wanted to eat it.
When he realized his desires were disgusting, that's what brought him to his senses.
And he cried, I'm going to go back to my father and say I've sinned against heaven.
And in your sight, make me your servant.
