The biggest unpredictability about it was call-outs, like murders anywhere in the country.

And you could go into work on any one day and not know when you're going to get home.

And that's the reality of it.

We all went into work and got sent to all corners of the country because...

The Garda Technical Bureau did and still does cover the 26 counties of Ireland, of Southern Ireland, and any major crimes, any murders, suspicious deaths that occur where a senior investigating officer has requested assistance, a team from the Bureau would be sent or was sent to examine them.

So you had to have your kit bag.

Yeah, we all had the kit bag ready there to go.

It's very hard to work in a section like that without the support of your family, especially if you have kids.

Like the hardest calls I had to make were, I won't be able to collect the kids from school today.

I'm going to Cork or wherever in the country.

That was tough.

And there was one that, like when I was thinking about this beforehand, the Christmas 2013, we had, obviously Christmas time we'd be on call and we were the unit on call that Christmas morning.

So,

Just in case that something happened, we had a Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve.

So I actually sat down and had a full dinner.

And lo and behold, half eight, Christmas morning, I picked up my phone that I hadn't had in the bedroom.
