But this week, Macy's posted its best final quarter comparable sales growth in four years, beating expectations by more than four to one.
Comparable sales at the 200 stores they've invested in and upgraded grew 3% during the quarter.
Bloomingdale's, their luxury brand, led the way with sales up 10% and the company raised its full year sales and earnings guidance.
It's a sign that CEO Tony Spring has full confidence in their Q1 trends and it'll keep going in Q2.
How did they do it?
Simply go back to basics.
close stores that weren't working, invest in the ones that were, make sure there's enough staffing, and keep stock of the best-selling items.
Pretty simple.
