It opened the door for everything that rapidly followed.
Eoka wanted the island to be united politically with Greece, a movement known as Enosis.
The cause was supported by a young Cypriot lawyer called Rhenos Lysiotis.
In 1955, he often represented those accused of involvement with Eoka in court.
On one occasion, two young men and a teenager shot dead a British soldier.
Rhenos was tasked with saving them from the death penalty.
In 1956, Renos joined AOKA formally and was appointed head of its youth wing in Nicosia, Cyprus's capital.
His role included gathering intelligence, organising demonstrations and rallying support for the group.
But he was still friendly with some Brits living on the island, particularly a husband and wife called Arthur and Tuna and their two young children.
One day, the family invited Renos to join them for dinner at a local pub.

In November 1956, the British authorities arrested Renos and took him for interrogation.
In 2019, the UK government paid £1 million in damages to 33 Cypriots who alleged they were tortured by British forces.
But the government didn't admit liability.
They said they settled to draw a line under the case and avoid spiralling costs which would fall on UK taxpayers.
They argued the passage of time makes it impossible to be certain of what happened.
After 18 days of interrogation, Renos was taken to Pila prison camp.
Prisoners were given a number and crammed into steel Nissan huts.
He stayed there for almost two years.
Reynos was interviewed by a committee under the auspices of the European Commission of Human Rights.
