And, um, and it was bad enough on him that it started to affect him at, at work.
And, um, and one day I come home and dad's standing in the corridor and, um, and he goes, Ruben, have you got a second?
I was like, yeah, what's up?
And he just goes, um, I've, uh, I've lost my job.
I was like, oh, um, how, how come?
And he couldn't answer the question.
He just, he looked at me and he just through like choking back tears said, I'm sorry.
And as he said that, he like, he couldn't complete the conversation with me.
He like turned away and went into his room.
And, um,
And it was still like one of the hardest things to confront, like your dad basically standing in his own house as a provider of your family, basically admitting defeat.
And it hurts to seem like that because my dad is not a failure by any stretched definition of the word.
But then a bit of time goes by after that and dad pulls me aside again and he says, Reuben, can we go for a walk?
We don't walk.
And so I'm like, what's this?
As soon as we step outside, dad says to me, your mother and I are getting a divorce.
And the whole world that I had grown up in just kind of came crashing down at that point.
Was that a surprise experience?
It was a shock to me because I'd grown up in a Christian household where like this wasn't typical.
It was like, you know, you're married, you're married for life.
