The IRS says, we're making this a permanent program.
The IRS is part of the Treasury Department, which is part of the administration.
So if you have a new administration come in and say, this shall not exist, then it shall not exist.
And then on the congressional side, you may see attempts by Republicans to defund direct file to prevent the IRS from using any money for it.
And with Democrats right now in charge of the Senate or having some control over that process, that's unlikely to happen.
But as Republicans gain more control, if they do in this fall's elections, then that's going to give them more leverage and more ability to use that power of the purse to clamp down on something like direct file that they don't like.
First of all, are you eligible, right?
Do you meet whatever eligibility criteria are set based on where you live and what your income types are?
And then it's really about your personal trade-off between how much you value in terms of dollars, the advice of someone who's not the IRS, whether that's your accountant or TurboTax or H&R Block.
Do you find value in paying whatever fee that is in getting...
that person's ideas, thoughts, that software's thoughts that are coming from outside the IRS?
Or do you kind of have enough trust that the system is straightforward enough that you just need
simple way to walk you through the process without having to fill out the whole form yourself.
And so I think that's really the question is like, you have a choice really about as a taxpayer, whether you think that tax prep is worth paying for.
And you've always had that choice, right?
Like there have been these free options that are out there before.
The IRS is now making this additional one available.
