It was a strange time.
Now it's all coming before the courts with Mangioni facing both federal and state charges.
Here over the killing.
But tomorrow, less than one month before that federal trial is supposed to begin, where Magioni is charged with stalking the CEO, his lawyer is suggesting that Mancioni could seek a plea deal.
We won't know unless and until it happens, obviously, but it seems that the feds are interested.
Some suggest that if this happens, it would likely bring a guilty plea to murder.
But instead of the government giving a sentencing recommendation, Mancioni's fate then
Would be left up to the judge.
This would allow Mangioni's team to present mitigating arguments that might not be raised in a formal federal trial.
He could say he was emotionally disturbed by the corruption of the healthcare business and his feelings about corporate greed.
What a judge would make of that, who knows.
That's why it's a gamble.
Another part of this is that Mangioni's team is claiming that if he takes a plea in the federal case, he would then be immune from state charges.
Charges which are still hanging out there because of double jeopardy.
You can't be charged twice for the same crime.
Again, that's for a judge to decide, but that is what was held in the Paul Manafort case going back a few years when Trump's one time campaign boss was facing fraud counts had made this double jeopardy claim successfully before he was ultimately pardoned by President Trump.
So Luigi Mangioni now rolling the legal dice.
Yeah.
Um, doesn't look like a lot of fun over there.
