What shines through on every page is Simone's almost relentless positivity.
One of my highest priorities after I started investigating this case was to message Simone's family in Germany.
I hoped they could tell me what they thought had happened to their daughter and help me get a better understanding of who Simone was.
I managed to reach them and we had a few email exchanges over several weeks.
In the end, they didn't want to be involved.
I understood and respected that decision.
But I knew there were important public interest reasons to press ahead.
Then, months later, toward the end of my investigation, I sent them some further questions by email.
