I remember talking to Paddy Sullivan and he used to have to go to people's attics and take them away and put them someplace safe where they won't do any harm.
Is it true, really true, that if they will go into people's attics and breed, surely to God, they will live in the parks of Dublin and Cork and Limerick and places like that?
Is this established?
Well, now, I wonder if I can discourage you away from this killing spree mentality that you have towards this amusing and entertaining animal and instead bring in pine martens and let nature do the dirty work for you in a sense.
Is this absolutely out as a way of doing things?
I think we're winning you over from your wicked ways.
Now, the mention of the wedding present from 1911, and that raises an interesting question.
I believe that, OK, the Grace Quill was introduced in England and here, but it was also introduced in Italy.
But it hasn't spread there.
It has.
Is it spreading?
Right through Europe?
The other interesting thing is the pox, the squirrel pox virus.
Now, most things are hammered fast by viruses, but there's always a little segment of the population which for some reason have immunity to it.
And you would expect that after all this time over a century, that there would be a segment of the red squirrel population.
A kind of herd immunity sort of thing.
A kind of herd immunity.
Well, in developing, you need a few individuals that for some freak reason are...
immune to the attack of this thing and they should prosper at the expense of all the others who go to the wall.
Why is this not happening or is there any evidence that it might be happening?
