But in Bin Laden's mind they drove out the Soviets, they'd beaten one superpower, they wanted to beat the other.
They thought if they could force the United States to come to the mountains of Afghanistan to meet them.
That they would crush them.

That didn't happen when US did deploy to Afghanistan.

hundreds, maybe close to a thousand fighters against um a US unit, a much, much smaller US unit.
And were utterly defeated and never tried a masked battle again.
So um this fantasy of bin Laden's that if we can force them to come and fight in in Afghanistan we can beat them like we beat the Soviets is just probably false.
But in nine eleven before nine eleven, of course, Bin Laden had no way of knowing that.
He thought if anything the Americans were softer and easier to beat.
