So the real thing is, if you need human hands or human assistance at the IRS, things will take longer.
If you don't, things won't take longer.
So if you're filing electronically and you're requesting a direct deposit and the information that you provide the IRS matches the information they have, including on things like the advanced child tax credit and stimulus payments,
then that's going to put you in a situation where things will move along smoothly.
If you start talking about paper checks, people with issues that need resolution, errors, mismatching, then that's going to slow things down.
What are people dealing with?
I mean, they're dealing with trying to reconcile payments they might have gotten during 2021 from the government with how that plays into their tax returns.
And it's going to vary by person, so we can't get into all those details.
But the IRS is sending out information to households now that will explain, here's how much our records show you received in these payments.
And if there are discrepancies, you're going to have to try and resolve them eventually.
But if there aren't, you should try and use the information the IRS has and make sure it matches when you file your return.
No, it shouldn't.
In fact, if you don't account for the money return, it should slow things down.
So if you say you have one child who's age 10 and so you're entitled to a $3,000 child tax credit for 2021, you receive $1,500 of that in advance.
To the extent that you're telling the IRS, yes, in fact, I did receive $1,500 of that in advance.
and that matches their records, you're going to want to reflect that.
If you tell the IRS, no, I didn't get any money, and their records show that you got $1,500 in monthly payments from July through December, then that's the kind of thing that's going to cause some problems.
If the questions are about the tax law itself, the IRS has lots of good information on its website.
They also have an online account system that has some limited use.
But the more specific the question gets to your situation, was a payment received?
