For a lot of private software, you have to pay either for both your federal and state returns or sometimes just for your state return.
I would start with those screening questions that you can find them on the IRS Direct File website.
Are you in one of those 12 states?
Do you have anything other than wage and interest in Social Security income?
Might you want to have a tax benefit for child care?
If you are eligible, then it really depends on whether you want to try something different.
new and free you might not consider it if you want your refund quickly because this is not going to be open widely until maybe mid-march you might just want to go ahead and file before that this won't affect refund speed at all really whether you file this way or a different way it all goes into the same system but just because this won't be open broadly you just have to kind of decide whether it's worth waiting around for this until they go wide

It's a real return, but it's just a test of this system.
