I'm guessing you've been pretty busy.
Yeah, Sean, it's probably fair to say that the last couple of years have been truly eye-opening for me.
It's been an absolute immersion process, I think, in the whole payroll process and how it relates to superannuation and
And I've learned a lot.
And certainly, I'm hoping I can share some of that with the listeners today.
Okay.
So the whole idea of Payday Super is, I guess, to do a couple of things.
And certainly, one of the things that it is designed to do is to make sure that employees get their deferred remuneration
in the form of superannuation paid at the same time as their immediate remuneration, which is the salary and wages that goes into their nominated bank account.
But the second part of that is that it should theoretically allow the ATO to keep a much closer eye on the problem of unpaid or underpaid superannuation.
So you'll probably be aware that there's around about $3 billion in unpaid super each year, and that can affect
about 3 million Australians.
And from what we understand, there is roughly around about, I guess, on average, and this is across the whole economy, not just for those who are unpaid or underpaid, that can be in the realm of around about $1,700, $1,800 a year that they're missing out on.
So by having the ATO in a position where they can keep a closer eye on what it is that employers are paying employees,
in the form of their superannuation, whether it's making it through on time, the ATO is in a much better position to actually be a little bit more proactive about the problem of unpaid or underpaid superannuation.
It is something that does require an entirely new mindset with regards to how employers go about paying their employees.
And then certainly there will be teething problems with that.
But what we think is that it's a great move all round.
And for those employees who are joining the workforce and
wondering why it takes so long to receive superannuation contributions, that problem will, I guess, go away.
