He was getting there so quick that he wasn't really giving himself enough time to where that baseball was staying on the barrel.
And when
getting into the weeds here, but when you have that steep angle with your barrel, and if you think about it, it's almost like your barrel's chopping down through the strike zone.
So essentially, there's only a split second where you can actually make really hard contact with the baseball.
versus I know you and I talked about last year when he was swinging it to where it felt like everything he was hitting was the size of a beach ball.
He was getting on plane so quickly, and that barrel, I mean, I can just picture it just so long through the zone, and long in a good way in the sense that he's getting on plane quickly, but it's like his barrel's catching that baseball, and it just sticks there for like a full second going through the zone, and then he gets that really long extension.
So now...
It just seems like he doesn't have a ton of time to make that great contact.
And you have to be so perfectly on time with your swing to hit it hard with that steep angle that it makes it very challenging to adjust to changes in speeds.
Now, I'm all for changing things and trying to do new things when other things aren't working.
So maybe this was, we're just going to try to be early on things.
We're just going to try to get our hands as quickly down to the baseball as we can because the shortest way to get from point A to point B is a straight line.
So instead of having a bunch of movement back here to where a barrel's getting back here, back behind your body, maybe we're just going to get straight down to the baseball.
And from there, maybe you kind of adjust back.
So I'm all for the process.
I'm all for trying to do different things.
That is just something to me that I've seen happen.
with this swing the past couple of weeks.
Because when we talk about Vladdy in the past and when he's not right, it's usually him not being on time for the fastball.
What can you do to be back on time for the fastball and then adjust to the off-speed pitches?
