And although in tonight's case the man Lamar had repented of his conspiracy with the blackmailer, like most repentants, it came too late.
It was some two hours after the blackmailer had struck down Lamar and escaped that Agent and Judge Ritchie and Special Agent Dodden of the FBI's St.
Louis office, in answer to a call from police headquarters in Newtown, arrived at the bedside of Lamar and was listening to his confession.
For the hit-and-run killing of Joseph Wilson and for his crime of extortion, Frederick Dixon is now serving concurrent terms in the federal penitentiary.
Mr. Lamar declined to press the blackmail charges, resulting in the release from custody of Martha Johnson.
As Special Agent Ritchie pointed out, it is the job of your FBI to catch criminals
and also to see to it that innocent people are not convicted.
We repeat that credo of the FBI tonight because this is a day which all Americans might well mark.
