He'd planned to spend a family Friday night with him to prove that he can be a good dad and partner.
But on the other hand, his mate's sounding pretty desperate and he's just reached out for help.
So Chris has to make a decision.
Chris invites Jack to meet him at Danielle's place.
And it's this decision of Chris's that leads to a chain of events that changes everything for Chris, for Jack and all of Jack's friends and family.
I imagine that's come as quite a surprise.
Danielle also agreed to speak with me about what happened that day.
For me, her account is a crucial way of checking Chris's version.
She says she definitely wasn't thrilled Chris had invited Jack over, and this is how she remembers it.
Chris and Jack go out the back and they chat for a bit.
Then, around 1.30pm, they head to the local bottle shop to pick up some more booze.
This is the same bottle-o that'll capture them on CCTV and record the last known video footage of Jack McLennan alive.
Jack and Chris grab some drinks and head back to Danielle's, where she overhears the two of them chatting.
Danielle hears Jack talking about how he and Carly had been arguing and how Carly wanted him to leave the house.
Danielle had her own issues with Chris.
At this stage, she was pregnant with their fourth child and she was getting worried about where this afternoon with Jack might lead.
She'd seen alcohol and drugs take control of Chris many times before.
And could he sometimes say things that he regrets or do things that he regrets?
And when he's like that, can he be violent?
Danielle watched Chris and Jack drink and chat in the backyard.
