You mentioned to JV is one of the best of all time, if not the best doing what he does at all of all time in terms of defending space, switching the variety of assignments he could take on all of those things.
I think historically, the other one that seems to be like losing its grip with the reality that I understand is the number of times I have to get into a heated argument to convince people not that Shaquille O'Neal was great, but how great he seems to be like weirdly slipping in historical conversations.
And I think some of it is just like.
Other recent players, other guards kind of like supplanting his place in the NBA order where there are just some forces of nature you had to see to understand.
And Shaquille O'Neal is maybe like the version of that for our lifetime more than any other player.
Don't do that.
Don't poop in people's hats or shoes.
I think some of it is he's just an archetype that to the extent he ever was an archetype, like he just doesn't exist anymore.
There is no thing to map Shaquille O'Neal onto in the modern NBA short of maybe prime like peak of his power Steph in terms of like you have to plan every single time you play for this team.
And if you're thinking you're going to play the Warriors in the playoffs, you better have three guys on your roster who can chase Steph Curry around.
Plus, I feel like the way we have a lot of these historical conversations is, if not zero sum, kind of close where, I mean, Kyle, you brought up Pippin.
It's like to make the Jordan goat claim, you kind of have to diminish Pippin a little bit, or at least you don't have to, but the conversation kind of tends to turn that way.
And if you're going to make the Kobe arguments, then you got to take some shots at Shaq along the way or at least kind of deprioritize what he means historically in order to make it.
And there's a lot of those arguments around like people are making those claims like that's a player who means a lot to a lot of people.
And so long as that's the case, I think Shaq is going to be kind of like in the shadow of it historically in a way that does not square with what I saw.
But clearly people disagree.
