He's going to suffer from insomnia.
And then he develops this extreme sensitivity to noise.
But despite this, he remained actively involved in running his newspaper.
And looking back on this point of his life, when he starts to go blind in his early 40s, as a much older man, this is what he says about this time.
He says that was the beginning of the end.
And this is the period of Pulitzer's life that was referenced at the very beginning of the book where he's like this Howard Hughes recluse for the last two decades of his life, just essentially wandering the globe.
He has no friends.
Everybody around him is paid to spend time with him.
And there's a great sentence that's just devastating.
And so this sentence describes the torment that he experiences for 20 years.
A giant intelligence eternally condemned to the darkest of dungeons.
A caged eagle furiously belaboring the bars.
So even though he never works in the office again, he's just wandering the earth, he's essentially running his business through all these hundreds, maybe thousands of telegrams that he's sending every week.
And even though he can't see and he has to have all of them read aloud, so he has to dictate the telegrams, obviously, and then the ones that he receives, somebody has to read aloud to them.
He's able to keep all this information in his head.
And there's a great paragraph that describes like a new hire for the world, what they would experience.
