It's just after 911. matched

Uh the US has bombed Kabul. matched

They've driven the Taliban out of the capital city and the Taliban are gone and a new Afghan government is taking shape and foreign forces are coming in. matched

I got there very early from Pakistan. matched

And I go to the center of Kabul and in a really a kind of a park or an open field, there is this um medical facility. matched

stability going up with tents and I look closer, it's the Russians. matched

Uh the Russians of the Soviet Union had fought in Afghanistan throughout the eighties, been widely hated, they left and and matched

Then they come back uh a decade later. matched

They were not part of the U.S. matched

coalition that drove out the Taliban, but they supported that effort. matched

Vladimir Putin was the new president of Russia. matched

Reaching out to the U.S. matched

He was very much uh he has he felt that they sh the US and Russia shared a problem. matched

He had been fighting um, as he saw it, Islamic extremists in Chechnya, and this was the same sort of thing the U.S. matched

So he was supportive. matched

Uh Russia again was not involved in the fighting, but that was the Russian military setting up this medical center with their tents. matched

And it just takes you back to this it it seemed like this was going to be the new world that the US and Russia could cooperate on things like fighting Islamic extremism. matched

And uh that world uh doesn't really matched
