I thought she did it just so well.
Um, it just came in really, as you say, subtly.
She never names Trump, but it's cultural wars going on, and the fact that he's framed as a
where he exists as a history teacher is of course a really brilliant touch because basically history is is not in a way overrunning him and um forcing him to question his job and and question his life.
But I thought she did that really I wasn't expecting it.
And it just sort of came in and she did it really, really well.
It's just things that are going on the school.
There's a scene in a a football game.
And suddenly you realize you've been lulled in in a way.
And then suddenly this like this horrible heated atmosphere comes in and it just turns.
But, you know, she does it really, really well.
Because, you know, obviously the temptation is to, you know, with this is to sort of bring the hammer out and just sort of bang, bang.
And but she doesn't.
And I think it's all the more powerful.
I did.
I think it's you know, uh I th it could be an American tradition in a way because he he's not someone that I've read, but you know, like Thomas Pynchon and and these sort of writers often have I think are silly names.
They they ring alarm bells in my head when I'm reading them 'cause I can't take the book as seriously.
But these names in this book and because Strout does it so well
that didn't bother me and I found these names exotic and good, very American, but they they didn't tip into silliness and so I found all of that fine.
Uh, The Boundless Deep by Richard Holmes, which is a biography of um Alfred Tennyson, the nineteenth century English poet.
