uh and said to him, I'm I'm thinking of um dumping the monarchy and, you know, we're gonna have a we're gonna become a republic And Castro said, Well, hang on a second, why why do you wanna do that?

Well, you know, we're gonna stand on our own two feet uh

And Castro said, Well, does the Queen interfere in your politics?

And um and he said, No.

And well, is she good for business?

Is she good for tourism?

Yes.

Well, just w why do you want to do that?

Um and I know this happened because Lester Bird regaled this conversation to Sir Sunny Ramfeld, who was one of the great Secretary Generals of the Commonwealth, who told me uh for uh for uh for for for my book.

So um I you know it's it's it's it's gospel.

Fidel Castro.

Castro was a fan of the monarchy.

You know, go figure.

Mm.

Well, you're absolutely right that it's a completely different media landscape.

I mean that that uh of all the changes I think that uh Elizabeth the second um reigned through was the the the media landscape.

And when she started it was completely reverential.

Uh and and the monarchy called the shots, uh and then by the end it's twenty four seven news, rolling news, social media, everything else, and that does make it uh

difficult.
