Economics is all about scarcity, and the scarcest resource in Antarctica is entertainment.

Liz had to figure out how she could amp up this sense of fun, this sense of entertainment.

One thing she did when she arrived was to clear out all the merchandise that wasn't selling.

They had stocked towels, for instance, and towels were included in other parts of the station, so no one needed more towels.

She also found some pretty suspect 1980s novelty items.

Liz ditched the panties and started to commission new logos, something surprising that she could put on hats and t-shirts.

People wanted entertainment and novelty and appropriate presents for the wife, and she had them made from scratch.

And then, shrewd as she was, Liz didn't just let people see all her new merchandise at once.

Liz Walters spent a few seasons on the ice, as they say, working the Navy store at McMurdo Station.

It would not surprise you that after a Navy stint was finished, she went into business for herself.
