The other part is how much is it getting in the way of other things in their life?
If you have someone who's working out every day, an hour a day, they do their workout, then they attend to their studies or their jobs and their relationships, great.
There's nothing wrong with that.
Where it starts to take precedence over other things, my patients...
who come in with muscle dysmorphia some of them have gotten fired from jobs because they're at the gym they can't stop working out and they're two hours late for work or they feel like they have to leave work early um some of them many relationships have ended because their partners are like you're just so obsessed with like working out or you're asking me a hundred times in the last couple hours whether
You're bigger than that guy or this guy.
Do you look smaller than you did yesterday?
And sort of that reassurance, compulsive reassurance seeking behaviors.
So they can lose relationships.
They can lose jobs.
They're obsessed with muscle dysmorphia.
There's a lot of obsessive thinking around it.
There's a lot of compulsive behaviors, whether it's working out, whether it's mirror checking, measuring themselves, weighing themselves, putting skin body fat calipers to measure their body fat.
So a lot of these men know like this is not normal.
Like this shouldn't be totally dominating all of my thoughts and my actions.
So that's another piece.
Certainly the other piece is when it encroaches into very unhealthy behaviors.
So, you know, working out and exercise is great for our health.
But now if you're engaging in substance use, anabolic steroid use or harmful supplements that are now harming your health, if you are developing an eating disorder or having very disordered eating behaviors that are impacting your health, well, then now we know that's not fulfilling the value of health.
