You know, states or colonies in the US had issued bonds for for decades before this.
What what was so special about these New York State bonds to finance the Erie Canal?
Just to put in context, I've been looking up the numbers on on American GDP.
Obviously GDP data going back that far is is pretty dodgy, but people think that the US economy was around seven hundred, eight hundred million dollars annual economic output.
So seven million dollars worth of bonds today is the equivalent of almost a a trillion dollars.
It was a massive project, right?
And I think maybe that's maybe that's why we consider it now the genesis moment for the m US municipal bond market.
Well, so a as time goes on, this Clinton's folly, DeWitt's Ditch, it actually looks more like Clinton's conquered the canal.
It's his triumphant moment.
Let's go into sort of after the canal is built.
We've done a bit of foreshadowing already, but it's October eighteen twenty five and it's opening.
Canal's been on construction for the past eight years, and it's now all of three hundred and sixty three.
Miles of it.
That might not sound like much today, but that was monumental at the time, right?
And it's ready for business.
It's four feet deep, it's forty feet wide, and it can cut time travel from Albany to Buffalo from two weeks to just five days.
Essentially like time travel.
