Because these were men who had been raised in the chaos of Weimar Germany.
They were too young to have fought in the war.
They were raised in the chaos.
They saw their parents lose everything in hyperinflation.
They saw how fragile their own futures were, and they saw a new future for themselves.
And after the Great Depression hit, that's when they gave up any belief in liberal democracy and the centrist powers.
Many of them went to the communists, but there were far more right-wingers in Germany at that time than there were left-wingers.
And I think this could be the risks that we're running today.

And your comment makes me think of a conversation I recently had with a friend down south.
He's a religious conservative in his 50s.
His son, early 20s, raised in a prosperous household, had all the advantages of being upper middle class, religiously and politically conservative.
And he's gone off the far right deep and into anti-Semitism.
And his dad is like, and so many of my friends are like this with their kids, like, what happened to you?
Well, it's all from online doom scrolling.

He has come to believe, these young people have come to believe that they have no agency, that everything,
