Um and you know, Smarts comes in a couple of different forms.

They come in forms of like, you know, technical Smarts and I mean obviously with the amount of proliferation of different technologies that I've seen over the course of my almost forty year career.

You know, having people with deep technical knowledge of those

uh things is super important.

Other smarts is wisdom, and I think that's where I come into the uh picture because I've seen a lot of different things.

In nineteen eighty seven I was on a trading desk when the stock market dropped twenty-five plus percent in one day in the US.

Um I've you know have have had the wisdom to come through a number of different investment cycles, credit cycles, economic cycles.

Um and so I kind of apply that.

But what that really has given me is creativity to

keep exploring and keep encouraging, uh looking at new things.

And it just so happened

that, you know, gosh, almost ten years ago now

I was encouraging um my friend who are who's now our CEO, uh, Jennifer Johnson at uh

Franklin that we should be kind of paying attention to this distributed ledger technology stuff.

Um I I can't say that I was, you know, was some sort of early enthusiast for Bitcoin.

But the those words distributed ledger technology seem to be pretty important because ledger

You know, capital markets, asset management are full of ledgers and it felt like there was gonna be something inside of this that was gonna be disruptive.

And we say disruptive it's both maybe

impacting our current business, but also might afford new opportunities and challenges for us as we move forward.

And so I think I was just uh you know, that's kind of the path, uh being able to be intellectually curious, surrounding yourself with really super smart people, and have um management and leaders who encourage that exploration and that just pure R and D activity.
