I think it is difficult to say categorically that the British pay more.
Clearly, in terms of the fare level, it is higher.
But you've got to set this against the entire system which is used for paying for the railways.
Essentially, people will be paying higher taxes in a number of those other European countries to support the railway system.
In Britain, we have decided it is the rail user who should pay the higher portion of it.
Also, of course, within most other European countries, fares have simply been set on the basis of the distance travelled, regardless of the time of day, regardless of the train that you're going on.
Whereas quite sensibly in Britain, we've taken the view that we should try and price according to the level of demand.
That means, of course, that commuters generally will pay rather more.
