And it goes like this.
The patient will talk, the doctor will talk.
The doctor will listen while the patient is talking.
The patient will listen while the doctor is talking.
The patient will think that the doctor knows what the doctor is talking about.
The doctor will think that the patient knows what the patient is talking about.
The patient will think that the doctor knows what the patient is talking about.
The doctor will think that the patient knows what the doctor is talking about.
The doctor will be sure, the patient will be sure.

Shouldn't hurt a bit, should it?
Communication is at the heart of a lot of the problems, but there are also technical competence issues as well.
And and the evidence is clear, and I saw this in my time as New Zealand's health complaints commissioner, that patients actually care about both.
Of course they want their doctor to be a good communicator with them and with colleagues and and with the hospitals, coordination of care.
But they also want to know that the doctor
who has maintained their knowledge and clinical competence up to date.
I think that's clearly so.
Patients are generally not well placed to form a view about technical competence, although people who become expert in their own chronic health condition will become aware about whether or not the doctor is asking the sort of questions that need to be asked.
