And indeed, when my book was published, one such patient contacted me just to describe what a ghastly and painful experience that was.
And I agree that we may well get more bang for our buck by focusing, as Australia and New Zealand have been on safer systems and you know all sorts of agencies have been set up and a very strong emphasis, particularly through the hospital system, on that.
But it's not sufficient.
The public thinks that rigorous checks are already undertaken to ensure that individual doctors remain competent and fit.
The public are very surprised when they learn that in fact all that is required is that somebody says, Oh yes, I've continued to do my continuing professional development.
That nobody actually does a check.
It's an honest system and I'm sure the vast majority of doctors are diligent and they try very hard, but it's not actually looking at their practice.

It's a minority who do that.
And we haven't sort of built into the system that we're getting what they call multi source feedback.
Feedback from colleagues about how I practice, feedback from my patients about how I practice.
So that's one way in which we could strengthen the current system.
And that's absolutely the case.
