Casement, he asked the Germans, they said, okay, we're going to send a weapon, a cargo load of weapons.

And that in itself is a whole story there.

They disguised a ship and it was an amazing feat by the German Navy to send this weapon through this British blockade around the Arctic Circle.

And they actually managed to pull it off.

Casement, in the meantime, persuades the Germans to send him in a submarine, which will get there faster.

And his hidden agenda is he wants to get here before the weapons to speak to the rebel, the rising leaders, like Tom Clark and others, to call off the rising.

He says, it's going to be a fiasco, a debacle, don't do it.

And the Germans kind of suspect this, so they're not sure.

So they want to get rid of Casement, but they want to make sure he doesn't arrive before the weapons.

And so this is the whole backstory to what happens in Cairns.

But then it all goes – I mean, from an Irish nationalist point of view, it is agonizing the fact that the Germans pulled off this masterclass in deception and navigation and getting the submarine and the weapons ship both rendezvousing off Tralee Bay on the night that they were supposed to be there.

And yet, being an Irish rebellion, it all –

Fell apart and went pear shaped.

And this is all, of course, near the climax of the book.

But the weapons end up not making it ashore.

Casement does.

But then he is swiftly captured.

Yes, he's brought as a kind of a trophy prisoner to London where he's then interrogated.

There's this kind of denouement with his antagonist, with Captain Reginald Blinker Hall at Scotland Yard.

And this is on the eve of the Rising and Casement begs them to say, look, let me send a message to my comrades to call off the Rising.
