And in this banqueting hall, it was really the performance of masks.
And the first one we know about that was performed there, The Mask of Beauty, was written by Ben Johnson.
And I think those masks...
Which to us are perhaps quite an exotic form of it.
I think it's quite difficult to imagine what it was like.
It's not an opera yet.
It's not a play.
It's a combination of dance and myth.
It was a very elite kind of entertainment.
It was done by the court.
Members of the royal family took part in it.
So Tethys Festival, which was written by Samuel Daniel to celebrate Tethys,
Prince Henry, who was the eldest son of James I, becoming Prince of Wales in 1610.
Everybody was in it.
His mother, Queen Anne, appeared as Tethys, goddess of the sea, in a rather gauzy outfit which allowed the court to enjoy her bosom, of which she was extremely proud.
And various countesses appeared as nymphs.
And the younger Prince Charles, who was of course later to become king, was Zephyrus.
Then in 1619, there was another fire.
And at that point, Inigo Jones, who didn't start off as an architect, he had begun as a writer and a designer of masks, was on hand and ready to design and build, well, actually, a whole new palace if he got the opportunity.
