But we all still know, we come to London and love Covent Garden.
And it's difficult sometimes, I think, to see what a revolutionary building it was.
What a revolutionary...
creation, the piazza and the church, were.
It was Francis Russell, the Earl of Bedford, who was trying to develop his land.
And perhaps you could say, because under James, we still see, as we saw under Elizabeth,
attempts by the monarch to constrain the growth of London, which eventually they realise they can't control it.
So they have to manage it.
And that, as you say, that's going to go on as London expands further.
and individuals want to develop their own land.
But, of course, the Earl of Bedford, the king realized that, as you say, he couldn't control the development, so you monetize it.
And there had to be planning.
He was also told that he had to use the king's architect, Inigo Jones, which was one thing that was difficult because Jones, described much later by John Somerson as a personality of terrifying force,
So the Earl had to deal with the terrifying force.
He also, as an element of what we'd now call planning gain, had to include a church.
And he didn't want to do that.
He resented that.
But this was a marvellous opportunity for Jones to do what he had seen on the continent, which had never been done in London.
