Who is Roxane Gay's nemesis?

Oh, yeah.

I came here from therapy.

So I actually do have top of mind answer.

I'm working on reclaiming my right to be difficult because I spend so much of my time trying to be a people pleaser and to make every person's sort of experience around me frictionless.

And I sort of micromanage like all of these things that are not my responsibility and

Because I just want people to like me.

I want people to think I'm charming and easy to work with and not a problem because so many Black women get labeled angry or difficult.

And so a lot of us have to work overtime to be seen as like the opposite of that.

And even with the working overtime and bending over backwards to cater to other people's whims and needs.

It's not enough.

And lately I've just thought, like, why am I always putting myself last?

And, like, why am I always working so hard to not be difficult when I have every right to be difficult?

And I don't mean obnoxious.

I don't mean cruel.

I don't mean selfish or anything like that.

But, like, a right to have standards, a right to, when you're dissatisfied with something, express that dissatisfaction.

Right.
