When we're teenagers, we're told our friendships are distracting, but it turns out this couldn't be further from the truth.
Research from Deakin University has found that our friendships are actually a really key part of our development.
In fact, the quality of our relationships during adolescence, that includes our parents and our friends, can influence the kind of relationships we'll have later in life, from our romantic partner to our own kids.
The study also explored just how important it is to create these strong relationships.
It suggested that the impact of poor adolescent relationships can extend into adulthood, parenthood, and even the well-being of the next generation, which is just wild.
Associate Professor Jackie McDonald, whose research has helped uncover these long-term patterns, is here with me right now.
And Jackie, I'm really surprised at that.
