You are 27 and you've had such a remarkable rise to politics.

You're the first person from sub-Saharan Africa to be elected as mayor in Australia.

How does it feel to be the first?

Well, I'm really keen to get into the life lessons that have got you here today.

Your first one, you told our producers, is that sacrifices need to be made.

That's one of your key life lessons.

Can you take me back to a moment when you had to make a difficult sacrifice in your life?

How old were you?

And it's a two-hour donkey ride.

And you had to bend down.

So you were eight years old in that moment.

And what do you remember about growing up in Sudan with your mum and six siblings?

And your mum fled to Australia with you and your siblings when you were a young boy.

Talk to me about your mum's decision to migrate to Australia all those years ago.

She made a really big sacrifice for you and your siblings, your entire family.

You must be so, so proud of her.
