And as you can imagine, the people in Washington that were dealing with the highway system were getting more and more upset.
And finally, one of them wrote to Avery and said, look,
If you don't solve this problem, we're not going to have a national highway system.
You've got to do something.
Cy Avery had a choice to make.
He could die on the Route 60 hill and put his entire highway at risk, or hand the governor of Kentucky a win and accept a less flashy number for his own road, like Route 62 or 60 North.
But both those numbers felt forgettable, even confusing to Cy.
The problem was, all the good numbers were already taken.
They had 24 numbers left over.
And they said, what number is left over?
One of them was 66.
And they said, why don't we try that?
And by afternoon, the decision was made, and they sent a telegram to Washington.
There was something about that number, 66, the way it rolls off the tongue, the visual impression of the matching sixes, a sort of edgy symbolism.
In other words, Avery was on board because... He thought he could sell it.
Ah.
I think that's what it amounts to.
Yeah, yeah.
He was like, this number has marketing power.
On November 11th, 1926, the states voted to accept the map for a new national highway system.
