And Pyle was the sports promoter.
So they got in touch with Charlie Pyle, and the end result was the great international transcontinental foot race from Los Angeles to Chicago and then on to Madison Square Garden.
The race would be open to any runner who wanted to register from anywhere in the world.
But Pyle also made a point of recruiting people he knew would make a good story.
In March of 1928, 199 men lined up and they included your typical American runners, a number of Olympic athletes, a black runner from Seattle, a guy that was in Bible movies who wore long biblical robes when he ran, a prize fighter from Arkansas who ran in red long underwear, at least for a while.
I mean, it was just a motley crew.
There were rich people whose families came along with a trainer and another car and
There were poor people who didn't have anything else to do.
They opened this up to everybody, and then they promised $25,000 to the winner.
At that time, I mean, that was more money than anybody had, you know, and $1,000 to the top 10 finishers.
And so this got worldwide attention.
You can imagine.
Newsreels covering the race don't have sound.
But on the first screen, a quote flashes onto the screen in cursive.
America calls it the Bunyan Derby.
A throng of spectators bobs around the hood of a black car near the starting line.
And then.
The runners are off.
They kick up a cloud of dust as they take off.
And the sports writers ate it up.
