So in 1928, these guys had all kinds of issues.
They ran into a snowstorm in Texas.
And in the Southwest, the black runners, as you might imagine, were not exactly welcome.
So they had to find places to stay in the local black community.
if there was a local black community for them to stay in.
And at one point, one of the runners was followed by a farmer with a shotgun who threatened that if he ever passed a white runner, that he'd get shot.
Sounds like a lot of people, you know, you're running across the country in 1928.
You're going to encounter the different dimensions of the country, right, at that moment in time.
And when we were interviewing people, I can remember two distinct times when somebody grabbed me by the shoulder and said, come here, and took me over to a window and said, I was sitting right there when the Bunyan Derby came through.
This was a huge deal for these little towns.
The runners plotted their way across the country, from L.A.
to Tulsa to Chicago and every small town in between.
Until, finally, 8th Avenue and Manhattan stretched ahead of them.
Madison Square Garden grown closer with each step.
It took almost three full months, but 55 men made it all the way from Los Angeles to New York City.
55 made it the whole way.
What happened to the rest of them?
They just dropped off along the way somewhere?
They dropped off.
Some of them got hit by cars.
