And almost immediately, they had a million subscribers.

there were Good Roads men all over the country in their individual states.
getting elected because they said, I will bring better roads.
The cyclist movement grew and grew.
Soon they pulled in rural postal workers, doctors and farmers in small towns who'd been complaining about mud for decades.
They got the railroad magnates more involved.
And they turned roads into a political issue, one politicians ran campaigns on, the way they might embrace climate or immigration as platforms today.
And these were politicians whose names you might recognize.
That's an excerpt from a speech by President Teddy Roosevelt, hyping up roads in 1903.
And here's another president, Calvin Coolidge, a couple decades later.
Cy Avery grew up alongside the Good Roads movement.
He went from being a kid who dug wagons out of knee-deep mud to a young adult who relied on those same roads to move out of state and go to college.
But by the 19-teens, he was done moving.
Tulsa, Oklahoma, was home.
Cy was in his 40s, married, with kids.
And he was ready to step up and do something about these roads.
