And now all of a sudden, as Grody and I have talked about a bunch, the improvement of the team sometimes has to come from the improvement within the team rather than going out and making a bunch of roster additions.

There's no doubt about that, Dan, but I look at it's very rare when an extraordinary interior defensive lineman becomes available, and we know that in the Bears' history it has been few and far in between.

You think of Akeem Hicks, you think of Tommy Harris, you think of Steve McMichael, you think of Dan Hampton back in the day.

So I look at it differently that while you're right, the Bears may not be a playoff

player away from being inside the top 10 for the super bowl but we have been begging for desirous of that guy that interior defensive lineman on brian poles's watch and i contend that it's possible that justin jones was the most effective guy at least at the three technique position on the chicago bears watch and i know he plays a different position but i would overpay for somebody like that at this point considering how important the position you don't have

They've got cards in their hand that they could play to restructure contracts and make cap space.

But right now, I think they're still the lowest available cap space in the league even before we get to the draft.

And so you don't have the luxury of playing those games.

You did that last year when you went out and you got Joe Tooney and Jonah Jackson and Drew Dahlman all within the span of a week.

And you made these...

huge investments and that those were the splashes you're just not allowed to do that every year if you were it would be a lot easier to sustain success in this league and I get it people people think it's really easy to press all the buttons and and all of a sudden voila you've got all this cap space there's sacrifices you have to make you would have had a trade a premium draft pick you would have had to uh make some hard decisions with your roster not only this year but in future years in terms of who you want to keep we just got done talking about Darnell Wright and making room for his extension

You're going to have to start talking eventually with Caleb Williams.

You're hopeful that Roman Dunze is in that conversation for an extension.

So there's a lot of things up the road that you have to be cognizant of that are coming for you before you just go, it's now or never.

Let's take this veteran defensive tackle and cross our fingers that he's the missing piece for a Super Bowler.
