Kidney transplant surgeons are busy people, but we managed to get an early morning interview over an internet line with Professor Anthony Warrens, President of the British Transplantation Society.
Rather than asking ourselves what are the chances of a match then, the pertinent question to ask now is how successful is a transplant likely to be?
And so, Kay, to give you the final answer, the chance of two unrelated people being a perfect match is one in 100,000.
But with medical and technological developments, you don't need to be a perfect match anymore for a kidney transplant to work.
So the chance of you and your husband being a good match were, in the words of Professor Warrens, remarkably high.

Yes, they liked the idea of choosing to give their donation to a charity where there was evidence that you could help the largest number of people for each dollar you gave.
