You know, that is certainly the hope to kind of drive more economic development in these rural areas.
But, you know, I spoke with a local councillor who's the head of the opposition area.
in the local council there.
And she said many, many people don't want this development because they worry it's going to transform this pristine rural landscape.
In fact, she said the Olympics in 1956, the last time they were held in Cortina,
The climatic conditions were right.
They even had one of the ice skating events on a frozen over lake.
But here we are having to kind of try to recreate the conditions with artificial snow.
And then also back then there was room for development, for people to come to Cortina.
But now...
The place is inundated with tourists already.
On one single day, you can get like 3000 people coming to this one lake for selfies because these places have been promoted on social media.
And it's just, you know, she says maybe because of climate change, because of this over tourism now isn't really the time to drive development to this area.
The International Olympic Committee, the IOC, is reckoning with a stark truth.
The pool of countries that can host the Winter Olympics is shrinking dramatically.
The IOC cites a recent study warning that because of climate change, by the mid-century, only about 10 countries may be able to host snow events.
So the IOC is considering moving the event between a small permanent pool of climate-reliable hosts or spreading the events across a wide geographic area or even countries to find the best higher-altitude snow spots.
And they may move the games earlier, beginning in January, to avoid the snowmelt that often happens by this point in the season.
